Circa aims to reflect the many styles, themes and formats embraced by professional historians. The biennial journal provides a forum for Professional Historians Association (PHA) members throughout Australia to publish peer-reviewed articles about how they engage with history and practice in a variety of areas such as cultural heritage, museums, oral history, commissioned history, the media, education and government.

Circa is overseen by a voluntary Editorial Board. The editors are Francesca Beddie and Elizabeth Offer. They can be contacted at circa@historians.org.au

Submissions may present findings from historical research; explore the use of common or unusual sources; reflect on challenges confronting the history profession; or examine a topical issue. Referees are looking for high-quality, original work that is underpinned by rigorous research, is well argued and written in an accessible style. The guidelines set out submission requirements.
Reviews of exhibitions, conferences, and other projects are also welcome. Please contact the editors to propose a review.
Timelines
Circa is published once every two years, with the next issue (no.9) to appear in the first quarter of 2026.
